CCF (Civic Cohesion Fund) is a DAF (Donor Advisor Fund) that invests in reducing toxic partisan polarization and enabling healthier public discourse and decision-making across our citizenry, politics, and media.
Challenge
Extreme discourse strengthens a minorities identity reducing the strength of an inclusive democracy.
The problem
There is evidence that over the past thirty years, Americans have become increasingly hostile to each other based on their partisan political affiliation. This phenomenon, also known as “affective polarization”, is one of the most corrosive forces in American life today.
Unlike issue polarization, which describes the kind of political differences to be expected in a healthy republic, affective polarization puts democracy at risk of deterioration.
The challenge
The solution
As Americans are less and less likely to interact with those from the opposing party, we are not being able to reach consensus. This trend has grown until the point it already affects our government and electoral process.
As a result, our leaders are failing when it comes to solving major societal problems through deliberation and working side by side with people from the opposite political party. As we lean toward a dysfunctional democracy and political violence are looming threats.
In view of this scenario, we believe that constructive engagement across political divides is a precondition for democracy.
Following this idea, we have partnered with Civic Health Project, a grantmaking non-profit organization that invests in research and practical interventions that promote healthier discourse, collaboration, and problem-solving across partisan divides.
